Global switch to coating-free ECO2 gearmotors

11/18/2024

By switching to coating-free gearmotors, SEW EURODRIVE is taking an important step toward making its product portfolio more sustainable.

Sustainable, cost-effective, and straightforward

SEW‑EURODRIVE is switching the manufacturing process for its gearmotors to the coating-free ECO2 design. This change is being applied as standard to gearmotors featuring with gear units with an aluminum enclosure and motors in sizes 56 to 90. The metallic surfaces of these drive components – motors, gear units, and flange – are aluminum, which is not prone to corrosion under normal circumstances. In fact, it even reacts with oxygen to form a thin protective layer.

Dispensing with the painting or coating process – which means there is no need for a drying process – cuts the energy required for coating. Production costs are lower, while the CO2 emissions are reduced by as much as 3% at the same time. The cost benefits this achieves are passed directly on to customers. What's more, eliminating the coating process makes the production process more sustainable, which makes it easier to feed the component back into the material cycle at the end of the product life cycle. Painting or coating is generally not necessary if drive components are used in indoor areas such as logistics halls. This leads to a win-win situation for everyone involved!

Order processing systems at SEW‑EURODRIVE will switch worldwide by November 22, 2024, thus ensuring standardized processes. In the case of existing material and partner numbers, customers must confirm that the ECO2 design is to be used. SEW‑EURODRIVE will then adjust the sample orders accordingly. As an option, the previous surface coating of paint in the color RAL 7031 can still be selected during the ordering process.

Background

Reducing PCFs (product carbon footprints) is part of SEW‑EURODRIVE's sustainability strategy. SEW‑EURODRIVE launched the ECO2 design for the small, size 63 DR.. motors in late June 2023. In December 2023, the portfolio was expanded to include motor sizes DR..71, DR..80, and DR..90, and therefore covers a broad performance range for switching to the coating-free, even more cost-effective design.

Designs and configurations

Available gear unit sizes:

  • Helical gear unit: 07, 17, and 27
  • Parallel-shaft helical gear unit: 27
  • Helical-bevel gear unit: 19 and 29
  • SPIROPLAN® right-angle gear unit: 10, 20, and 30 plus 19, 29, 39, 49, and 59
